As a result of the Philipstown Town Board vote Wednesday, Oct. 31 to reopen schools this week, the board held a conference call with school officials Thursday, Nov. 1. Both Haldane Central School and Garrison Union Free School then announced that they would be open and hold classes this Friday, Nov. 2.

Although Putnam County has declared an ongoing state of emergency, Philipstown officials believe conditions are adequate in the area for transportation to school.

To make up for missed school days this week, students will also attend classes on Tuesday, Nov. 6, which was previously scheduled as a Superintendent’s Conference Day.

I appreciate the efforts of Dr. Villanti, the Town Board and Highway Superintendent for their work in passing the resolution to get our students back to school. For those of us who were still without electricity or were still cleaning up from the storm, having a safe, warm place to send our children was a great relief. Our thoughts are with those on the other side of the county who sustained more widespread damage for a speedy recovery so that their children can get back to normal, too.
