Nurses group says hospital affected

NewYork-Presbyterian announced that it will cut 2 percent of its health system’s 50,000 employees, who include workers at Hudson Valley Hospital in Cortlandt Manor and medical offices in Cold Spring. 

In a statement on Tuesday (May 20), the hospital system attributed the cuts to “macroeconomic realities and anticipated challenges” and said that it is working to reassign as many affected employees as possible.

NewYork-Presbyterian did not respond to questions about layoffs at Hudson Valley Hospital or its Cold Spring offices. But the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) said on Monday that the cuts will affect 70 nurses at Hudson Valley Hospital, Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. “These hospitals already struggle with hiring and retaining enough nurses for safe staffing,” it said.

According to NYSNA, the hospital system announced the cuts in a video town hall with employees on May 5, the same day a law firm representing hundreds of women said the health system and Columbia University had agreed to pay $750 million to settle sexual abuse claims against a former gynecologist, Robert Hadden.

I’m just guessing that while firing or reassigning 1,000 employees because of “macroeconomic realities and anticipated challenges,” the top executives and majority shareholders of New York-Presbyterian did not take a financial hit.

I believe the nurses. If the New York State Nurses Association says these cuts come at the same time the hospital must pay a lot of money for one of its doctor’s abuses, I am taking note. You could say this is like robbing Peter to pay Paul, but given that the hospital is taking away 70 nursing jobs (nurses are still overwhelmingly female) to compensate the female victims of a male doctor, perhaps it’s robbing Martha to pay Mary? It’s a doubly sad day for healthcare in the Hudson Valley and for the nurses and (almost certainly mostly) female office staff who will again bear the brunt for criminal male behavior.

Staff cuts are not the solution. According to the hospital’s most recent nonprofit filing with the IRS, President and CEO Steven Cor-win earned $14.6 million in salary, benefits and perks in 2023, and Laura Forese, the chief operating officer, earned $7.7 million. [via Facebook]
