Nearly 20 years ago, working with a limited budget, Gillian Thorpe (right), director of the Butterfield Library in Cold Spring, asked her mother, Valerie Reid Robertson (left), to paint a tree on a support beam and ceiling in the children’s room. On Oct. 3, with her mother looking on, Thorpe read Miss Twiggley’s Tree at story time beneath the mural, which will be removed during renovations.
