The Highlands Current Student Journalists Program provides an opportunity for high school students in Beacon or Philipstown to be mentored by skilled journalists while they serve as paid correspondents for our nonprofit newspaper and website. We hope the program will help train a new generation of skilled journalists and generate enthusiasm for the profession.

The reporting of correspondents selected for the program appears at highlandscurrent.org, and select stories are printed. Students primarily cover their high schools and issues related to young people.

The correspondents are invited to attend (schedules permitting) our editorial meetings and meet individually with editors and reporters to discuss story ideas, potential interview subjects and any issues that may be involved in their stories.

The staff, when editing stories by our student correspondents, provide detailed feedback and suggestions to improve and refine their reporting. Students are expected to submit photos and video (when applicable) as part of their assignments.

To participate in the program, students are required to apply and agree to guidelines about professional behavior and how to interact with sources as representatives of the paper. Those who are minors must have the permission of a parent or guardian to participate.
