Study ranks best counties for small business

SmartAsset, a financial technology firm, crunched IRS and census data to rank which New York counties provide the best environment for small-business owners. Its annual rankings are based on the percentage of residents who reported small-business income, the proportion of that income to overall income, and the amount of taxes paid by small-business owners.

Putnam County ranked third, after Yates and Columbia.

The firm also crunched the numbers to rank the counties where residents have the least credit card debt compared to income and net worth (Putnam ranked sixth) and where they get the “most bang for the buck” by comparing property taxes to public school quality and crime rates (Rockland was first, and Putnam ninth). Dutchess was not reported in the top 10 on any of the three lists.
