Apparent suicide just south of station
A Yonkers man was killed on Thursday (April 5) after being struck by a Metro-North train just south of the Beacon station.
Joseph J. Lanza, 28, was struck by a northbound train scheduled to arrive in Beacon at 12:08 p.m., an apparent suicide, according to Metro-North, which termed the death as neither “accidental nor criminal.”
A graduate of John Jay High School in Hopewell Junction, Lanza was the brother of Candace Lanza, who owns The Beacon Bagel on Main Street. He worked as an analyst for JP Morgan Chase.
Lanza was the son of Gary Lanza and Wendy (Kopyscianski) Savastano. In addition to his parents and sister, he is survived by his stepfather, Anthony Savastano; two other sisters, Tracy Lanza of Wappingers and Mandy Lanza of Kentucky; and two nieces, Enya Runge and Lilliana Hare.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 10, at the McHoul Funeral Home, 895 Route 82, in Hopewell Junction. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 11, at St. Columba Church, 835 Route 82, followed by interment at Fishkill Rural Cemetery.
